Véronique Zuël-Bungaroo is Mauritian. At a very early age she showed a great interest in singing. In 1990 she went to London for lessons with Mrs Winifred Ramsay and did a training period with the British Youth Orchestra. She then took part in productions of the European Chamber Opera at the Holland Park Festival and on tour in England. As well as singing in choirs Véronique Zuël-Bungaroo has also interpreted the roles of Maria in Bernstein’s West Side Story, the Countess in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Norina in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale and Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohême.
When she returned to Mauritius in 1999, Véronique Zuël-Bungaroo continued her musical career with Jean-Bernard Thomas, a French singing teacher. She was the soprano
soloist in sacred works such as Faure’s Requiem, performed with the Choral Singers and the choir of the University of Cape Town, Bach’s Magnificat and Charpentier’s Te
Deum with the musicians of the Conservatoire Francois Mitterrand.
She also performed in the opening ceremony of the Hilton Hotel in 2001, the Negro Spiritual Concert
with the choral singers and the opening ceremony of the Indian Ocean Island Games in 2003.
In 2005 the Archets de Paris, a chamber music group on tour in Mauritius and Reunion Island chose her for the very first regional performance of the works of Chevalier de St Georges. Véronique Zuël-Bungaroo played the role of Mi in Franz Lehar’s Le Pays du Sourire in May 2007 in Mauritius and then in December 2007 in Dinard, France.
In the Opera Mauritius Festival 2009 she was Leïla in The Pearl Fishers. This year she performed Les Nuits d’été by Berlioz at the MGI with the orchestra of Reunion Island conducted by Brad Cohen.
