VENTREVE

Vent d'un Reve

Association Vent d’un Rêve was born thanks to Mr. Paul Olsen and Fondation Spectacles et Culture in February 2011. Mrs Merven was the founder of this project having taught music to the children of Mangalkhan for fifteen years. One key factor in the project has been the involvement of the teachers and parents of Cité Mangalkhan. To foster a sense of responsibility for the project, the Association was registered in February 2012 under the name of “Vent d’un Rêve”. In April 2014 Vent d’un Rêve separated from Fondation Spectacles & Culture and was officially CSR registered, N/1623. A working team composed of teaching and administrative staff meet twice a month to see to the smooth running of the school and organize the different activities.

The Managing committee, composed of residents of Mangalkhan (The mother of 1 of the children, an active social worker and a young university graduate), 2 retired school headmasters, a musician, an actuary who has taken charge of the financial section, meets monthly to guide and advise the project, to encourage team building and ensure the Association is correctly structured and managed. The Association raised funds for the project in 2012 via kind donations mostly for instruments, equipment and for the renovation of the hall where the project activities are based, + CSR Funding.

Project Components

The Children:

There are about 120 children between the ages of 3 to 18. They all play at least one instrument with a choice between descant recorders treble recorders, violins and trumpets. All the instrumentalists have at least two lessons a week in small groups. They all sing and participate in creative craft and drawing classes.

Those children who have problems with speaking, reading and writing are given special attention and help. Speech is improved through singing. Reading and writing are improved due to playing music, reading music. Above all, through the creation of a safe environment where pressure from the classroom context is dissolved and fear of committing learning errors removed.

Food programme:

As most of the children arrive directly from school, and sometimes come from families who cannot afford breakfast or lunch, they are given a light meal before their classes.
- Tea and bread or juice and biscuits
- A party with cakes and drinks after an event.

- In their general learning development they are improving in self-confidence, emotional intelligence and communication skills, attention span and ability to concentrate
- In their social development they are learning to work in groups and are thus learning mutual trust and respect. They are becoming more disciplined in their behavior and respect for the staff
- It is empowering the teachers and voluntary workers from the Cité with regular training in music, teaching, management skills and community building
- It is in the process to making the project secure and continuous so that it can ultimately become self-sustaining with former pupils taking on teaching and organizing roles.
